Erich Ribbeck is a former German football player and coach, born on June 13, 1937, in Germany. He played as a forward for several German clubs, including Hessen Kassel, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Kickers Offenbach.
Ribbeck began his coaching career in the 1970s, first working as an assistant coach for several German clubs before becoming the head coach of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1987. He later coached Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg, and Bayern Munich.
Ribbeck's most significant achievements as a coach were winning the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) with Eintracht Frankfurt in 1988 and reaching the UEFA Cup final with Bayer Leverkusen in 1988.
Ribbeck is perhaps best remembered for his time as the head coach of the German national team from 1998-2000. He led the team to the Euro 2000 tournament, where they were knocked out in the first round. This disappointing result, coupled with some controversial selections and tactics, led to Ribbeck's resignation shortly after the tournament.
Overall, Ribbeck is regarded as a respected figure in German football, both as a player and coach, but his stint as the national team coach is not remembered fondly.
